I’m thrilled to announce my entry to the New Babbage Poster competion is successful.
The poster will be displayed at Caledon Oxbridge University Community Gateway as part of an information notecard dispenser, to encourage newcomers to Second Life to visit the steampunk town of New Babbage. It will be located near a popular ‘hangout’ area, outside the main room where newcomers to SL receive their basic movement and avatar training, and also adjacent to the Lecture Hall, where many daily classes are held for new and experienced residents.
A big thanks goes to Mr Marion Questi for organising this competition!
The poster is based on the idea that you will find your muse in the town of New Babbage, whether you are going to build buildings or steampunk vehicles or make garments or publish books. The muse is someone who represents the creative energy and the joy of creation. I also wanted to create an image that references the power of human relations too – for New Babbage is a town of strong community bonds. I used the town skyline as a backdrop, but foregrounded the two characters – the muse and the ‘newbie’, who is enthralled and taken away to what appears to him to be a wonderful new and strange steampunk town. And yes I did want to suggest that there is the possibility of romance…
This poster represents the peak of several years of amateur graphic artwork in the virtual world. Today I mused that it might be fun to have a retrospective poster exhibition and show how my work has evolved over the years. I have a strong belief that the virtual world fosters education, and there is no better example than my graphic arts skills, where years of responding to community needs have helped my graphic art education. More to follow!
